The Rooftop is an independently owned and operated online music store.  Our main goal is to support independent and unsigned artists.  Granted, there are some "bigger" artists featured on this site, but our main focus is on the smaller artists.  Some are signed to labels borderline well-known (like Gary Murray on Velvet Blue, or Liz Janes on Asthmatic Kitty), while others are either unsigned (like Kari Evely or The Hojos) or are on very small, usually self-run, labels (like The Dementia Cookie Box on Dozing Lady, or Stoll Vaughan on Shadowdog).

You know as well as we do that there is a ton of amazing music out there, and a lot of it doesn't get the recognition that it deserves...for every Sufjan Stevens there's a Watson Park.  For every Bright Eyes there's a Dave Applegate.

We also know that a lot of unsigned and independent artists don't necessarily have the time, money or energy to promote their albums on a national stage.  They'll sell them at shows, and, possibly, through their Myspace page, but if you can't track them down, you're usually out of luck, missing out on a great album that you may never be able to find again. 

At The Rooftop, we seek to change all of that.

We want to bring together the greatest group of unsigned and independent artists that the world has ever seen.  We want this to be the place where you can look for something you've never heard of, and come away with something amazing.  We want this to be the place where you can find that folk or punk group that played at the club last weekend, but you didn't have the money to buy their CD while you were there.

We also want this to be the place for unsigned artists to come and have their CDs represented.  If you're thinking, "I have this CD...now where do I sell it beyond the local realm?", this is the place for you.  We don't turn down requests to carry your CD, no matter how low-budget you seem to think that it is.  If you have a CD, we'd like to carry it.  Simple as that.

We also would like to make this place a community of sorts.  We don't want it just to be our music store...we want it to be your music store as well.  Do you have a request for us to carry an album or artist?  Tell us about it.  Do you have an idea of how we can improve?  Tell us about it.  Would you like to write a review for an album?  Send one to us.  Do you have a picture of an artist you'd like us to put on their page?  Let us know.
